Despite its popularity in use in our relationships, it is a very vague concept requiring clarification. It is based on my extensive research of various scholars and theorists since Sigmund Freud. I will explain different types of empathy that I call compassion families, such as emotional empathy, cognitive empathy, compassionate empathy, sympathy, apathy, pity, emotional independence or indifference, and dark empathy.
