Description
Roland Kim’s Five Stage model highlights the multiple dimensions of collectivist and individualist societies. Excluding the Matriarchal Collective Society at Stage 0, this model hypothesizes three dimensions within the Collectivist Society and two dimensions within the Individualist Societies:
The five-stage civilization model is based on Hofstedes’(1980, 2010) cultural data and Inglehart and Wezel’s cultural value map (1997, 2010, 2014), which aims to provide a lens through which we can view human civilization. It is an invitation to reflect, learn, and envision a future where the lessons of the past guide our steps forward.
Authoritarian-Dependent (Stage1): India, China, Venezuela
Competitive-Narcissistic (Stage 2): South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil
Cooperative-Controlling Societies (Stage 3): Germany, Japan, Austria
Libertarian-Independent (Stage 4): USA, Great Britain, Australia
Collaborative-Actualizing Societies (Stage 5) Norway, Finland, Netherlands
The patterns of interdependence between members in these five societies are also divided into the categories: dependence, counter-dependence, socio-dependence, independence, and inter-independence, respectively. Stage 0 through to Stage 3 in the socio-cultural context are collective in nature since members are still emotionally dependent on one another and other collective entities through various emotions such as fear, antipathy or anger, and anxiety.
